How to tune your Ukulele

The most popular tuning for Ukulele is G C E A (with G being the string closest to your nose while the Ukulele is held in the playing position and A being the string closest to the floor).

This tuning is commonly called ‘C6 tuning’ as playing all the open strings together

creates a C6 chord. (don’t worry about this just now!).

Four Methods of tuning your Ukulele

1. Use an Electronic Tuner (Recommend)

2. Use ‘Reference’ Notes played on a Piano or Keyboard (or a ‘virtual’ keyboard on computer or  iPad/Phone etc.

3. Use one ‘Reference’ Note from another instrument  or ‘tuning fork’ and tune the rest of the strings to this note.

(If you think the Ukulele is pretty close to being in tune and you are not playing with any other     instruments you can tune it to ‘itself’ using this method).

4.

SopranoConcert and Tenor (different sizes of Ukulele from small to big) usually are to be found with this tuning. Baritone Ukuleles (bigger still – think half sized guitar) are normally tuned the same as the first four strings of the guitar (E B G D from the floor up) and will be covered on another page.
